SHOCKING NEWS: Nigeria Is The Highest Producer Of HIV-Infected Babies – FG

The Federal Government has confirmed a report, which ranks Nigeria first on the list of countries with a high record of mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS in the world.

The Government noted that local and international indications confirmed that Nigeria produces 30 percent of children born with HIV/AIDS globally.

Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, told newsmen at the launch of a roadmap on the implementation of the National Treatment and Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV/AIDS in Abuja,

Tuesday, that the situation was worrisome and requires collective action of all stakeholders, with the support of global partners to correct the statistics.

The minister also confirmed that Nigeria has 3.1 million people living with the virus, out of which 1.1 million people have been under proper and timely treatment from the government.

He said he was impressed with the commitment of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) to the cause of proper and timely care for patients with the virus.

“There is no reason why Nigeria should be the highest producer of babies infected with HIV because we have put in great efforts in the past. Obviously, more is required to achieve more results,” he added.

The minister expressed hope that the reinvigorated fight against the virus would result in a significant drop in the spread and good attention given to people living with the virus.

Sport: Mikel Obi Finally Breaks Silence After Being Omitted From Super Eagles Squad

Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has stated that he remains fully committed to the national team and will make himself available for selection once he sorts out his ‘physical and fitness issues’.

The Tianjin TEDA midfield maestro, who has not been in action for Nigeria since the World Cup in June, emphasised that he will keep supporting the Eagles as they look to seal their place in the 2019 AFCON billed for Cameroon.

“I’m still not ready to come back yet. Still have some physical and fitness issues. I wish the team well and will always do.

“My commitment to the national team remains 100%; I still remain a part of the team and will always support the lads. The Nations Cup remains our ultimate goal for now and we are just one point away from reaching that target,” Mikel told AOIFootball.

Gernot Rohr had earlier revealed that Mikel’s exclusion from the team is down to his own decision and that the 31-year-old is to determine when he will return to international duty.

Tech: Canadian Governor General, Explains Why Nigeria Must Own Comm Satellite

•As country mulls trip to the space
By Emmanuel Elebeke
The Governor General of Canada and world renowned astronaut, Julie Payette says Nigeria must continue to operate her own communications and Remote Sensing satellites to be able to share relevant data that can help solve some intricate problems.

Payette gave the advice at the National Space Research and Development Agency, NASRDA, in Abuja, recently, during her state visit to Nigeria.

She proposed the operation of both Communication and remote sensing satellite in Nigeria to enable the country gather data and share information about any natural disaster that may occur in the country with a view to finding a lasting solution to the problem.

According to the Canadian astronaut, the operation of such satellites allows for an opening for collaboration where the needs of Nigeria can be placed where all other communities working together would assist her in tackling her challenges.

She said, “having a communication satellite and remote sensing capabilities in Nigeria opens doors to a lot of collaborations. If there is a remote sensing demand on ground because of the flood or natural disaster, every nation that has remote sensing satellite will provide data, whoever has satellite at the time will now provide the data so that the authorities will use that data to tackle the disaster? Nigeria is in that group.

She said that although there are lots of works on ground, but having the proper data from space has the capability of providing solutions to problems.

“One of the most important thing is that when you have a project like that, it inspires the young generation to study science and technology and eventually become engineers and professionals.”

In his remarks, the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu admitted that the visit may not only help science and technology grow in Nigeria but could also help the younger ones study science and technology in schools.

Onu, who described Payette as a great woman of knowledge promised that Nigeria’s space programme will progressively advance to the expected end.
“Our space programme is progressing satisfactorily. I am very proud of the work NASRDA has done over two decades of its existence.

“As a government, we are committed to space research and development. We will ensure a master plan for NASRDA which includes having Nigerians in the space. It is a vision we will pursue vigorously because we know that through space science and technology we will be in a position to have positive impact on so many aspect of our economy, be it in communications, environment, defence, health or education.

“By the size of our country, space is important to us, having the largest population and largest market in Africa. It is important to join the rest of humanity to explore space now. Through Space research and development, so many important discoveries have been made,” he said.
Imperative Of Driving Research And Innovation For Industry

Onu also revealed that “Nigeria has been cooperating with so many countries, including Canada in the area of space research and development. We will like to continue in that collaboration. Canada has been a very good friend of Nigeria and we want to deepen that relationship and partnership.”

Highlight of the visit was the presentation of her personal collections from the space; Training Model of the Canadian used by all astronauts in preparation for their work in space; Photo of her wearing the Patch of her second mission to space on international space station; among other items to space among others.

Earlier, the Canadian Governor and her delegation met with teams of graduate students at the master’s and doctorate levels and teachers who presented the findings of their cutting-edge research. She also delivered remarks where she described her own career path and the importance of science and innovation.

News 2019: Nigerian professionals in US want participation in Nigerian politics

By Chioma Gabriel

TOP Nigerian professionals in the medical, legal, finance and other fields recently gathered in Las Vegas, United States, to discuss the state of the Nigerian nation and the way forward, as the 2019 general elections draw closer.

 Obasanjo-Atiku-Buhari

They also discussed how they can contribute to the imminent turn-around of Africa’s most populous nation.

The event was hosted by Dr. Chinyere Okeke, Medical Director at Grand Desert Medical Services in Las Vegas at her palatial home in the Summerlin suburb of the city, when Hon. Sam Egu, the Assistant Director (South East) of the Atiku Campaign Organisation visited last weekend.

The guest speaker at the event, Hon Greg Egu stressed the importance of diaspora Nigerians, whose financial remittances have been the major back bone of many projects back home.

Addressing the Diaspora Nigerians, he said, “ Your influence on the people you support with money back home is a major asset since you can easily influence more people back home to vote for the candidates you believe in, with the projects you put in place.”

Some of the burning issues on the minds of the diaspora Nigerian professionals bothered on re-structuring of Nigeria, free and fair 2019 elections, turning the economy around and voting rights for Nigerians in the diaspora.

He said:“His Excellency Atiku Abubakar has been favourable to the restructuring of Nigeria.

“As a northerner and businessman with interest in many states across the country, he is one of the most liberal politicians in Nigeria. His clamour for restructuring dates back to 2003. He understands the need for more states to develop its resources instead of waiting for monthly allocations from Abuja”

Egu emphasised that this system is working perfectly in the US, where the states and counties are in charge of education, agriculture, power and others, while the federal government is saddled with few things like security, customs, immigration, interventions and a few others.

“The northwest politicians have always been the ones who instigate this opposition for restructuring by the north,” continued Egu.

“But a good leader will further educate them on the many positive gains the devolution of power from the centre to the operating units will bring in a proper federal system.

“Atiku intends to reach out to all the stake holders from the moment he gets into office. He believes that is a legacy he will leave for Nigeria for ever”

For Chief John Anozie, a top Las Vegas pharmacist, “the issue of passing a bill to allow the millions of Nigerian nationals in the diaspora to vote at Nigerian embassies across the world is very important.”

He said: “ From statistics, Nigerians in the diaspora contribute about 20 per cent to the GDP, through the billions of dollars remittances to family, friends, businesses, etc. So, it is imperative that this is recognised by allowing us to participate in choosing the leaders through voting. “This issue was discussed in the past with former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole and the current Special Adviser to the President on Diaspora, Abike Dabiri when they visited Las Vegas last year but nothing has come out of it so far.”

We Are Relying On Courts To Settle Nigerian Dispute - MTN

MTN Group, Africa’s biggest mobile operator, will keep engaging with Nigerian authorities to resolve a $10.1 billion dispute with the west African country, but is putting its faith in the courts to protect itself, its Chief Executive Officer, Rob Shuter said yesterday.

Reuters reported that the telecom firm, which makes about a third of its annual core profit in Nigeria, has said the allegations are without merit, but added that no further negative steps have been taken by authorities in Nigeria.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on August 29 ordered the South African firm and its lenders to bring $8.1 billion back into Nigeria that it alleges the company sent abroad in breach of foreign exchange regulations.

MTN also faces a $2 billion tax demand from the country’s attorney general.

MTN has denied any wrongdoing, and filed a court case against the central bank.

“We have continued engagement with authorities, exchanging documentation and there is genuine will to reach an amicable situation,” Shuter said on a conference call.

“However, we need to protect ourselves and we are relying on the courts in Nigeria to make sure there’s an amicable resolution.”

A court hearing between the central bank and MTN on the $8.1 billion repatriation case is scheduled for Tuesday (today).

Shuter said investors should note that the company did not expect a resolution to come through then.

“No further negative steps have been taken by the authorities in Nigeria, however it is important to keep legal steps going,” Shuter said, adding that MTN was not carrying out any repatriations from Nigeria for now.

“Tomorrow (today) we are likely to have an adjourned date because more information will likely be requested, however, it is important to create an environment to look for continued solutions.”

Shuter said although it had been a difficult quarter due to the regulatory challenges in Nigeria, the company still managed to put in a strong performance in Africa’s biggest economy with data revenue growing.

MTN said its debut stock market listing in Nigeria may slip into early 2019 because it needs to work on the format for the share sale.

It reported a 1.1 per cent rise in quarterly user base, helped partly by strong performances in Nigeria.

The company said its user base increased by 2.5 million subscribers to 225.4 million users in the quarter ended September, and mobile money customers grew by 1.7 million to 25.8 million users.

Mobile money customers charge their phones with cash, and send it to friends or family via the short message service.

These counterparties can then make similar transfers or cash in their credits with pre-approved agents, such as merchants or banks.

Nigeria’s Ranking on Governance in Africa Drops

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation has revealed that Nigeria scored 47.9 in overall governance, ranking 33 out of 54 countries in Africa.

Although Nigeria increased in ranking from 35 in 2017 to 33 in 2018, the country’s overall score dropped from 48.1 to 47.9.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports, the 2018 Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG) was launched by the foundation during a live event yesterday.

The report noted that the score is lower than the African average of 49.9 and also lower than the West African average of 54.3.

The report stated that Nigeria received its highest category score in Participation and Human rights, scoring 53.2, and its lowest score in Sustainable Economic Opportunities is 43.5.

It further showed that Nigeria received its highest sub-category score in Participation snagging 62.7 and its lowest in Transparency and Accountability scoring 34.5.

The 2018 Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG) covers 10 years’ worth of data from 2008 to 2017 inclusively for 54 African countries.

Reflecting on the 2018 Index report, Mo Ibrahim, Chair of the Foundation, said: “There are many positive trends emerging from this year’s index.

“Fifteen countries out of the 34 which register progress in Overall Governance over the last decade even manage to accelerate their pace of improvement in the last five years. “Among those, Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco, and Kenya displayed the most impressive progression, stepping up from 41st, 25th and 19th to 22nd, 15th and 11th ranks respectively over the past decade.

“On average on the continent, improvements in indicators related to health and infrastructure stand out. “There are also recent and welcome improvements in Rule of Law and Transparency and Accountability even if scores in the latter are still low,” Ibrahim said. The Foundation was established in 2006 with a focus on the critical importance of leadership and governance in Africa by providing tools to assess and support progress in leadership and governance.

The IIAG provides an annual assessment of the quality of governance in African countries and is the most comprehensive collection of data on African governance.

News: Customs seizes over 500 bales of fabrics in Imo

By Chinonso Alozie

OWERRI—THE Controller of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Federal Operations Unit, FOU, Zone C, Owerri, Olusemire Kayode, yesterday said the unit seized 563 bales of used cloths from smugglers.

 File: Customs

Olusemire told newsmen in Owerri that 2,000 bags of foreign rice and used tyres were also seized by his unit.

The controller said his command also impounded 21 bags of cannabis, known as “Indian hemp” in a black Avalon car that usually plied Owerri/Onitsha road.

While displaying the items at the NCS, Enugu, he said: ”563 bales of fabrics, 2,000 bags of foreign rice, used tyres and soap all bearing an overall Duty paid value, DPV, of N65.13 million were also seized by the unit.

“Four hundred and thirty bags of foreign rice estimated at N8.64 million disguised as bags of cement in a heavy duty truck with used fridges were equally confiscated by my men.”

He warned that, “Smuggling of second-hand clothings had continued to stifle the growth of local industries including textile mills across the country.

“People should know that smuggling is not a decent vocation and that it has adverse effects on our economy. We are ready and prepared to deal with all those who have stubbornly refused to purge themselves of this because we are now better trained, equipped and mobilised to neutralise their antics.”

Sport: Pogba, Martial combine for much-needed Man Utd win

Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial scored as Manchester United recorded a much-needed, if unconvincing, 2-1 Premier League win over Everton to ease the scrutiny on manager Jose Mourinho on Sunday.
Gylfi Sigurdsson’s late penalty ensured an anxious end to proceedings for the hosts but, with United’s legendary former star Eric Cantona watching from the stands, his fellow countrymen did enough to secure three points.

The result also vindicated Mourinho’s decision to drop struggling centre-forward Romelu Lukaku from his starting line-up after the Belgian international had failed to score in his previous eight games.

Pogba shot United into the lead after 27 minutes, although he needed a large slice of luck to convert after his penalty was superbly saved by Jordan Pickford.

The decision to award the spot-kick was hotly disputed by the visitors although Idrissa Gueye did appear to impede Martial as he darted into the area even if the Frenchman made the most of the contact.

When Pogba strode up to take the penalty, he performed his by-now familiar routine of making a series of stuttering steps — no fewer than 26 in total — before seeing his shot stopped magnificently by the Everton keeper.

To spare Pogba’s embarrassment, the rebound broke kindly for the midfielder who tapped it calmly into the open net, but he still received jeers from some sections of the United support.

It was just the start the hosts needed after the disappointment of the midweek home Champions League defeat by Juventus and a run that had seen them win just one of their previous seven games.

Three minutes into the second half, Pogba was involved again for United’s second, brilliantly finished by Martial with a curling right-footed shot from outside the box, reminiscent of his second goal in the 2-2 draw at Chelsea last weekend.

Everton had enjoyed their best spell after going behind to the first United goal with Sigurdsson heading straight at David de Gea from a promising position and Theo Walcott placing two chances too close to the United ‘keeper.

Sigurdsson and Richarlison then linked well to send Bernard clean through on goal and, after managing to round De Gea, the Brazilian appeared poised to convert into the open net only to hit the side-netting from a tight angle.

Everton were finally rewarded for their endeavour after 76 minutes when Pogba lost the ball to Sigurdsson and the Icelandic international sent away Richarlison who was clumsily felled by Chris Smalling for the second penalty of the game.

Sigurdsson took a more orthodox approach to his effort than Pogba, blasting an unstoppable shot past De Gea into the corner.

United negotiated a nervy finale, but they could have had another goal when Martial was played clean through on goal only to be denied by Pickford.

Gist: Actress Omoni Oboli And Her Husband Celebrate Their 18th Wedding Anniversary

Actress Omoni Oboli and her husband, Nnamdi, are celebrating their 18th wedding anniversary today October 28th. They are blessed with 3 boys.

The actress wrote;

18 years later, you still make me deliriously happy! I couldn’t have married a better man!
The woman I am today, I owe it all to God and you! I love you endlessly. Thank you for loving me unconditionally. My hero! Happy anniversary baby! Forever beckonsHer hubby, Nnamdi wrote;

What a ride it’s been for 18 years living with this beautiful, dutiful, and resourceful woman, wife and mother. Words fail me to express my immense gratitude to God for the life in the years we’ve lived in grace and wonder.

We made our vows, and it seems like we blinked and time gained wings and we became breathless due to the rollercoaster romance. We were one from two, and from that God-given union came three more, yet we remained one at once, never to renounce.

I can’t begin to recall all the nuances that make for the beauty of what we’ve learned that holds us together and keeps it all fresh and exciting. But what I know is that I’m looking forward to many more years, God willing, of more moments together that are also nail biting.

I wish you darling the best the world could offer, but more than that, I wish you the best God has prepared. This is wishing us another happy Anniversary, and pray that this best friend of mine will continue to grow in grace doing and loving all that she ever cared.

I love you more 18 years over, and wouldn’t trade the moments that we’ve shared in light of the beauty that it’s produced. So join me in celebrating another milestone as our marriage continues in momentum, never to be reduced

Gist: Osas and Gbenro Ajibade's rumoured separation is another example of the curse of celebrity weddings - Ayo Shonaiya

Nigerian entertainment consultant, Ayo Shonaiya has weighed on the rumoured troubles in the marriage of Nollywood actors, Gbenro Ajibade and Osas Ighodaro.

According to Shonaiya, 'normally I wouldn’t do this, because I hate commenting on people I don’t know personally, but this Osas and Gbenro rumoured separation is another example of the curse of celebrity weddings. People should understand that marriage is not a spectator sport'.

See the rest of his tweets below...

Normally I wouldn’t do this, because I hate commenting on people I don’t know personally, but this Osas and Gbenro rumoured separation is another example of the curse of celebrity weddings. People should understand that marriage is not a spectator sport...— Ayo Shonaiya (@AyoShonaiya) October 28, 2018

Like I said, I don’t know Osas and Gbenro personally. In fact I first heard about them because of their wedding. I also shared an elevator ride with them in New York at the NEAs. They seemed quite cool. Beautiful people. Almost picture perfect sef...— Ayo Shonaiya (@AyoShonaiya) October 28, 2018

Funny enough, years later, at the premiere of Wedding Party in Toronto, I shared another elevator ride with Osas at the car park, but this time I didn’t recognise her! She had shorter hair, but I guess it’s because their wedding wasn’t trending anymore...— Ayo Shonaiya (@AyoShonaiya) October 28, 2018

My point is, these celebrity weddings, it’s always loud on the day and some days after. When it’s not trending anymore, there’s a pressure to retain that public buzz, so much so it’s subconsciously embedded in the marriage itself. It’s a mind thing...— Ayo Shonaiya (@AyoShonaiya) October 28, 2018

And for the public, they have moved on to the next celebrity wedding. The next thing you can give them to give you that buzz back is have a baby, then yayyyy. Then what next? It’s like an ongoing TV series. Your lives now become “content”...— Ayo Shonaiya (@AyoShonaiya) October 28, 2018

Celebrity couples should understand that when you start these “series”, the public are subconsciously waiting for a plot twist, and the most common plot twist for a celebrity wedding is a celebrity divorce!!! It’s a mind thing...— Ayo Shonaiya (@AyoShonaiya) October 28, 2018

Lastly, from someone who’s been happily married for what seems like an eternity, and as odd as this sounds, the best way to keep a marriage strong, is NOT to treat the marriage like it’s the most important thing in your lives. Trust me. It works ?— Ayo Shonaiya (@AyoShonaiya) October 28, 2018

News 2019 presidency: APC attacks Obasanjo, Atiku

The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has lambasted former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, and the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking through its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, APC said their new alliance will fall like a pack of cards before President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 general election.

The party stated that the former president’s description of Atiku as a corrupt, disloyal and unpatriotic leader who was not fit and proper to lead the nation was enough testimonial to the unsuitability of his former Vice.

This was contained in a statement Nabena issued on Sunday in Abuja.

The statement read, “Throughout their second tenure in office, (2003-2007) and until last fortnight, former President Olusegun Obasanjo had described Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as a corrupt, disloyal and unpatriotic leader who was not fit and proper to handle the mantle of Nigerian leadership.

“Only recently, Obasanjo vowed that God would not forgive him if he supported the Presidential aspiration of Atiku as ‘it would amount to handing Nigeria over to sharks and looters.

“It is this tendency towards indecision, insincerity, double talk and deception that has made Nigeria ridiculed in the eyes of the international community.

“A statesman is known for his principles and his statements are based on the strength of his convictions.

“When a supposed national leader makes declarations that are subject to change at any time based on his mood, such a leader loses his integrity and reliability.”

Nabena further described PDP’s 2019 vice presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as double-faced and pretentious.

“Nigerians cannot be deceived, we have seen them all – Presidential Library, Bells and American University of Nigeria, Breweries and Shopping Malls, all established with largely public funds but privately owned by public officers,” he added.

Nabena said that as a former military head of state and Petroleum minister, Buhari made no attempt to acquire an oil well, private jet or estates in Nigeria and abroad.

“Muhammadu Buhari is definitely different from the double-faced candidates seeking election,” the statement said.

News 2019: 'Atiku Will Defeat Buhari, Osinbajo Has Failed God' - Prophet Olagunju

The presiding Bishop of Divine Seed of God Chapel Ministries, Prophet Wale Olagunju, has reiterated his earlier prophesy that the presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, will defeat President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 presidential election.

Prophet Olagunju revealed this during an interview with Sun News on Sunday, October 28.

The cleric, who accurately predicted the return of notable APC members back to their former home, also noted that those who are yet to decamp will do so and “throw their full support for the man after God’s heart”.

"Let me congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari for winning the ticket of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and let me also make it clear to him that he will lose to Atiku Abubakar. Let me also congratulate Atiku in advance because he will win the next presidential election come 2019. Let me say, as a matter of fact, that Buhari does not need an Alfa or prophet to deceive him that he would win the election, for as God lives, he would lose. What the present President of Nigeria and the ruling party would rely on to have their from Buhari. You remember I predicted the return of notable APC members back to their former home, to be frank, big guns in APC will soon decamp and begin to campaign for Atiku. It is then that Buhari and the so-called APC will realize that the party is as good as dead."

The man of God also took a sweep at the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, describing him as a failure.

“I am highly disappointed in Yemi Osinbajo. He has failed God and the entire Christendom and ought to have resigned by now because to me, his integrity as a pastor is in doubt.

“He is in a government where they are killing his Christian brothers on daily basis and he sat there, folding his arms.”

Prophet Olagunju maintained that Buhari is destined to lose with or without Osinbajo, adding that Yoruba’s will vote for Atiku.

News: ‘Buhari Has Brought Respect And Honour Back To The Country’ – Lai Mohammed.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed says the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has performed well on most of its campaign promises and therefore, deserves a re-election in the forth-coming 2019 presidential elections.
He said this when he made an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

Mr Mohammed also stated that the president has rebranded governance and has put the country on the path of sustainable growth and development, among other things.

He said, “He has rebranded governance, he has put the country on the path of sustainable growth and development, he is rebuilding infrastructure, implementing what can be described as the most ambitious social investment programme in the history of the nation, he is ensuring that a few fat cats do not loot the national resources, at the same time, he is ensuring that Nigeria is self-sufficient in many areas especially in food production.

“Above all, he has brought honour and respect back to the country and at the same time, fighting all forms of insecurity.

“We have put in place certain measures that have made it difficult for those who want to loo our resources to do so”.

Mr Mohammed further stated that the anti-corruption war which was one of the three cardinal objectives of the government has been well executed.

He cited some cases, noting that investigations are still ongoing and appropriate actions will be taken eventually.

“In the case of the NHIS, Dr Usman Yusuf, the matter is being handled at the highest level.

“The government is on top the matter and in a very short while, we are going to find a resolution to it.

“The issue of Babachir, of course, he was fired. Not that alone, he is being investigated by the appropriate agencies. We are not going to micro-manage,” he said.

Google urges journalists to use data for news story

Lagos – Google on Thursday urged media personnel to take advantage of data to tell news stories.

Google: employees protest China censor friendly search engine codenamed Dragonfly

Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Anglophone West Africa, made the appeal at the Data Tools Training for Elections Reporting organised by Google.

“As the forthcoming general elections in Nigeria approaches, Google is training and empowering the media on the use of modern data tools for effective reporting during the election.

“Social media and online journalism have played an important role in helping to build stable democracies, resulting from informed voting, and as more people get online, the impact grows.

“The months leading to the Feb. 16, 2019 elections presents great opportunities for media to innovate on their storytelling abilities through the use of online and social media tools.

“The essence of the training is for participants to have the knowledge and tools necessary for innovative and insightful election reporting,” he said.

Kola-Ogunlade said that the participants would be taught how to use online tools like fusion tables, polls, Google Advanced Search, Google trends, social media streams and Google alerts to track and develop stories.

He said that for effective news telling with data, journalists should make use of “Data Pipeline’’, as the core steps to tell stories with data.

He said that the biggest problem in writing with data was presentation, adding that one needed to do proper analysis so that the story line would impact the audience.

He urged the participants to start using the web to do what they currently did and to understand that the web had a lot of free tools, which could be adopted and used to have a good story.

2019: Atiku advises Buhari to adopt issues-based campaign

Business Development Manager, Google, Ms Felicia Otolorin said that the essence of the training was to enable publishers sustain momentum in their sites during elections using Google tools.

“Elections are here and people are interested in what is happening and the key thing to ensure that people stay in your site to access top stories on the homepage.

“Others are consolidated menus, display key categories, highlight your top stories related to the category and others,’ ‘she said.

She urged the participants on internationalisation, which she said had to do with the kind of audience a publisher keeps.

She said that during election, other countries would want to get information of the happenings and there was need to have the type of audience that would give different amount of value to ones site.

The Google for Elections workshop is a one-day, hands-on certificate programme. and is focused on using social media, visualisation and citizen reporting tools to tell election stories. (NAN)

News: Alarm over Chinese “human flesh” drugs

IT sounds like a tale from a fictitious horror novel or movie, but unknown to millions of Nigerians they could easily be consumers of Chinese drugs made with human flesh!

Scientists confirm that a combo of drugs can prevent cardiovascular diseases, heart attack and sudden death

It would have been difficult to believe this shocking news if the main food and drug regulation agencies such as the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the Nigerian Standards Organisation (SON) and the Nigerian Customs Services (NCS) had not confirmed it. In fact, it was the South Korean Customs Service which reportedly tipped off the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), which in turn notified the above-mentioned Federal agencies, including the Nigerian Postal Service (NPS) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

According to the NIA: “The South Korean Customs Service, on 30th September 2018 revealed that it (had) seized 2,751 Chinese drugs/capsules containing human remains from foetuses, infants and flesh imported into the country by the some Chinese nationals. The manufacturers claim that the drugs can boost stamina, cure cancer, diabetes and some terminal diseases”. The South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety also isolated 18.7 billion viruses, including Hepatitis B in the Chinese killer drugs.

This sobering news confirms how Nigerians are made to pay a heavy price for allowing their country to become the dumping ground for cheap, foreign-manufactured products. Unfortunately, this includes the reckless abandon with which the Federal Government and other African countries have been gorging on freely available Chinese loans and other financial offerings without checking the hidden conditions that could harm our economies the same way that the human flesh drugs are guaranteed to do.

We are shocked that it took the tip-off from South Korean government agencies which are diligent in their mandates to protect their people before our own indolent bureaucrats realised the danger that our people have been in for years. What if the South Koreans had not alerted us? Why did our security and consumer products safety agencies sit on their haunches, even when the Chinese government had, way back in 2011, announced they were investigating alleged production of drugs with dead foetuses?

2019: “ Hungry, desperate PDP ” does not deserve your votes, Amaechi tells Nigerians

South Korea immediately swung into action and confirmed the allegation with sample products bound for their country but we only embarked on our usual fire brigade alarms long after millions of our people might have been been accidental turned into “cannibals”. In our culture, this is both an abomination and crime against humanity!

While we call on the Federal Government to set up a high-powered panel to look into the circumstances surrounding this Chinese horror drugs scandal and punish all negligent officials, we call on all Nigerians to boycott all Chinese drugs, foods and other topical consumables for now. Chinese manufacturers have very little respect for scruples and international regulations especially in products they sell abroad.

We must be on our guard!

Health: Eight tips on how to eat more fruit daily + recipes

Fruits are an essential part of our diet because they are packed full of nutrients with loads of amazing benefits for our health. However having this knowledge does not compel us to eat as much as we require for maintaining good health. Here are some tips that will help you include more fruit daily.

Start With Fruit
Start your day with some fruits as part of your breakfast. A little fruit salad with oats for breakfast will keep you refreshed in the morning and is a great way to start your day. Garnish your cereal with berries, apple slices and bananas, then help yourself to a glass of freshly squeezed juice.

Try Dried Fruit
Dried fruits are not just delicious but also nutritious and they are great for snacking. Dried mango, pineapples, apricots, bananas, raisins, dates are great snack options available in supermarkets. Snacking on dried fruits during the day will contribute to your daily fruit intake.

Drink Your Fruit
Investing in a juicer is one way to ensure you always enjoy the nourishing goodness of fresh juice. You can mix and match fruits to get your desired flavour. Pineapples, apples, strawberries, watermelons, oranges, kiwis, carrots and more are great for juicing and super delicious.

Detox With Fruit
You can also consume more fruits daily by detoxing with it. Water is highly beneficial for overall good health and 8 to 10 glasses of water is the recommended daily intake. Take drinking water to another level by adding some fresh fruits to it, this improves the taste of the water and help to flush out toxins from your body.

Prep Your Fruit
Prepping fruit beforehand makes it easy to eat them when you have to. Peeling a pineapple or Pawpaw in advance, storing in Ziploc bags or air tight containers and placing in the fridge will make you more likely to reach for it as soon as you need it.

Freeze Your Fruit
When fruits are not stored properly they get spoilt quickly and you may end up wasting it. As soon as you get your fruit, wash, peel and place in little portions to freeze. Frozen fresh fruits retain their flavor and last longer. You can always reach out for them on the go.

Display Your Fruit
You are more likely to pick up an apple if it is displayed in a fruit bowl on your kitchen counter, dining table or in the refrigerator. It is so easy to reach out and eat one because you can see it. Displaying fruit is a great way to encourage yourself and entire family to eat them because it is readily visible and available.

Variety of Fruit
Eating the usual apple, oranges, banana might become boring after a while. Try a rainbow of fruits; buy peaches if you have never had them, try Soursop, get a variety of berries. Purchasing a variety of fruit will encourage you to eat more fruit because it will be exciting to try something new, which you may probably fall in love with.

Sport: Developing zero tolerance for doping in Nigerian Athletics

By Yemi Olus

It’s not the best of times for Nigerian Athletics! One of the country’s most talented athletes and No.1 in the women’s 400m Hurdles for the past two years, Glory Nathaniel, was a few weeks ago, provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit(AIU) due to the presence of a prohibited substance, Stanozolol, in her system.

National Police Games: Enugu Police Command re-screens 112 athletes

Athletes during Asaba games

A Provisional Suspension is when an athlete is suspended temporarily from participating in any competition or activity in Athletics prior to a final decision at a hearing conducted under the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Anti-Doping Rules or the Integrity Code of Conduct. The AIU was founded by the IAAF last year to combat doping in the sport, and the unit functions fully independently from the IAAF.

2018 Youth Olympic Games: Chukwuma, Akintola win medals for Nigeria

Nathaniel won Gold for Nigeria at the 2018 African Championships in Asaba, finishing ahead of Morocco’s Lamiae Lhabze and defending champion, South Africa’s Wenda Nel. The details surrounding her positive test are not yet clear, as the date of control was not revealed by the AIU. However, if it happened before or during the African Championships, there is a huge possibility of being stripped of the Gold medal.

What makes this development heartbreaking is the fact that Nathaniel’s talent is not in doubt. She’s been consistent in the last three years and had been positioned as the one to break Ajoke Odumosu’s National Record of 54.40secs set at the London 2012 Olympics.

Nathaniel represented Nigeria at the World Championships in London last year where she made her debut at the championships with her brother Samson, becoming the second set of siblings after Osmond and Davidson Ezinwa, to represent Nigeria at the IAAF World Championships. She got to the semis in the 400m Hurdles, and was part of the women’s 4x400m relay team that finished 5th in the final.

At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Nathaniel set a new Personal Best of 55.01secs in the semis and finished 6th in the final. She went on to win a Silver medal in the 4x400m.It is therefore sad that such a promising athlete would have to spend some time away from the track due to a doping infringement.

The last time Nigeria was hit with a doping scandal at this level was in 2016 when another talented female quartermiler, Tosin Adeoloye was banned for eight years in 2016 after a failed drugs test. She had previously tested positive to an anabolic steroid at the 2012 National Sports Festival in Lagos, and was subsequently banned for two years. She returned to the sport in 2015 only to fail another test in 2016.

The pair of Samson Idiata and Chinazom Amadi who won Gold in the men and women’s Long Jump events respectively at the 2015 African Games in Congo Brazzaville, were stripped of their medals after being banned for four years each for failing dope tests in Brazzaville. Sprinter Deborah Odeyemi suffered the same fate as well at the Games. The bans ended the careers of all four athletes.

Unlike in the past where an athlete was solely held responsible for failed dope tests, the IAAF is now coming up with new anti-doping measures that would hold National Federations more accountable for their athletes. This became necessary following the widespread doping scandal that enmeshed Russia’s Athletics, which led to the European nation being banned from the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Part of the measures being put in place will see the AIU Board categorizing member federations into one of three groups based on their level of success and the perceived risk that the federation poses to the sport from possible doping. In descending order, the categories will be A, B and C.

Category A will be the smallest category including the previous “watch list” Federations. It would comprise of members most at risk of doping.Athletes from these countries will have to undergo at least three out-of-competition doping tests in the 10 months prior to a World Championships or Olympics.Four member federations: Kenya, Ethiopia, Belarus and Ukraine, currently fall within that group.

Category B will be the Federations who have international-level success in Athletics, and Category C will be the largest group containing smaller federations with limited international success in Athletics. The rules are to come into effect in 2019.

AIU chairman, David Howman, said: “For too long the strict requirements of the anti-doping rules have fallen largely onto athletes. The IAAF Council should be congratulated for adopting innovative new rules that also make all of its member federations accountable on anti-doping matters. This will help ensure lasting and meaningful change in Athletics.”

Going forward, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) must demonstrate that they have zero tolerance for doping, and take proactive steps in ensuring that our athletes compete fairly at all times. They must also do more in terms of sensitizing the athletes about the threat doping poses to their careers. If the new rules being proposed are anything to go by, it means that the action of an individual can pose a great risk to the nation as a whole, and that is why the AFN must be up and doing.

And to the athletes, I would re-echo the AIU’s warning: “As an athlete you are solely responsible for whatever is in your body at all times. Our advice is simple:IF IN DOUBT, DON’T TAKE IT.”
